New Rivian R1S: All-New Features in the Second-Generation Model

The Rivian R1S is arguably the best large electric SUV on the market, especially for those who want three rows of seats and are willing to pay a premium. The vehicle boasts a rugged build, excellent software, impressive range, and sleek design. Just about two years after the original Rivian R1S was first offered to early buyers, Rivian has launched a new second-generation version of the vehicle.

But what really sets the new Rivian R1S apart? At first glance, it looks more or less the same. So, should you trade in your first-generation model for the new one? Here's a look at all the new features in the second-generation Rivian R1S.

         Design and Interior

Design and Interior

The front of the vehicle is slightly smaller, likely due to the relocation of some components from other areas of the vehicle to the front.

Up front, there are also new lighting elements, including a new Adaptive Drive Beam function that automatically reduces glare for oncoming drivers. Additionally, there's a new RGB lighting feature that can use the front light bar to indicate things like the charging status.

The interior, however, has seen some significant changes. Rivian has introduced two new premium interior models, featuring new interior paint and finish options. Moreover, the glass roof is now electronically tinted, replacing the permanent tint of the previous generation's glass roof. Rivian has also added new interior storage compartments, addressing a major complaint about the interior of the first-generation models.

 Technology and Infotainment

Perhaps the most significant changes are the technological upgrades under the hood. For instance, Rivian has introduced a new heat pump that will warm the vehicle's interior much faster than the previous generation model while using less energy.

There are also more convenient ways to access the vehicle. Rivian has added ultra-wideband (UWB) support, allowing Apple users to utilize Apple Car Key in the Apple Wallet app. This feature is also available on select Pixel phones and is expected to roll out to more Android devices in the future.

The infotainment system and software have also seen significant upgrades. Rivian has reduced the number of electronic control units (ECUs) to just seven, down from 17 in the first-generation model. Simultaneously, the computing performance of each unit has been enhanced.

The software features new design elements, including a new drive mode screen powered by Unreal Engine, providing stunning visuals. Other new software features are bundled into a subscription service called Connect+. This subscription offers access to video streaming via Google Cast, as well as connectivity to various content subscriptions like Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and Alexa.

Even the wiring of the Rivian R1S has been refined. According to Rivian, the new electrical architecture has reduced the vehicle's wiring weight by 20 kg, which can help improve range and reduce production costs.
