It seems we'll be learning more about a next-generation PlayStation sooner or later. In early 2024, Sony Senior Vice President Naomi Matsuoka told Bloomberg that "the PS5 is entering the final phase of its lifecycle." Although she did not explicitly state that a PlayStation 6 is in development, it's reasonable to assume that the company is already working on its next console. While there aren't many rumors yet, it's never too early to start speculating about next-generation consoles. How will the PS6 compare to the PS5? Will some of the best PS5 games be available on the PS6? And what about the upcoming PS5 games that are set to launch soon
The best clue regarding the release date of the PS6, or at least when it might have been planned, points towards 2027. This information comes from an official Microsoft document related to the acquisition of Activision Blizzard: "By the time SIE launches the next generation of its PlayStation console (expected around [redacted]), it will have lost access to Call of Duty." While the specific date is redacted, analysts have connected the dots between this and the agreement Microsoft proposed to Sony to keep Activision Blizzard games on PlayStation consoles until 2027. This suggests that, at the earliest, Microsoft didn't anticipate a new PlayStation arriving before 2027.
Looking at past generations, this timeframe aligns with the lifespan of previous consoles. The PlayStation 4 had a seven-year run before the PS5 was released, and the PlayStation 3 also lasted seven years before its successor appeared. The PS5 launched in 2020, which means a 2027 release would again give us a seven-year console cycle. While we wouldn't bet on 2027 with absolute certainty, anything from late 2027 onward seems like a safe guess.
